Kokngiew Village is located about 15 kilometers east of Luang Prabang. It is nestled between Highway 13 en route to Vientiane and the Khan River. The villagers generate their income from farming spices. An increasing number of villagers are making a living as tuk tuk drivers, tour guides and producing handicrafts to sell at the local markets. All village families grow their own rice in rice fields, located within the village.
We chose to build a preschool here because of the village leader’s and parent’s commitment to their children’s education. The villagers allocate a portion of their annual income towards two to three village projects annually. Each year at least one project focuses on their children’s education. Their village is noted for graduating top students in the regional secondary schools. We admired and applauded their focus on education and wanted to help them.
