  • UK Wilderness Service Project - Nongbia Village

Back in May 2012 Sean Day of UK Wilderness Expertise contacted Give Children A Choice about bringing a group of students from the UK to Laos and doing a community service project during their visit.  This was only the second time we had been approached with a project like this but were excited at the chance to have young people experience life in a rural village of Laos and to help with some routine maintenance at one of our preschools.   After a couple of discussions with Sean we chose

  • Luang Prabang Orphanage

In August 2008 we visited the Luang Prabang Orphanage where children suffer from chronic malnutrition and hunger.  Although the children were hospitable and appreciative they were not very happy.  These young people not only have to deal with the loss of their parents but they also suffer from hunger.  Approximately 500 children ages 6 through 18 live at the orphanage.  Roughly 15% are girls.

  • Nong Hed Tai

Nong Hed Tai Village is a Hmong village located  approximately 120 km from Phonsavan in Xieng Khouang Province.   The majority of the villagers settled here after leaving nearby Kengkhouay Village in 1973.

  • Dindam Village

Dindam Village is located within a kilometer’s walk on Highway 7 to the Vietnam border.  Highway 7 stretches from Luang Prabang’s Phou District’s Sam Nyek Village at the intersection of Highway 13 and Dindam Village to the east.  Dindam Village homes are built in a valley along Highway 7.  Mountains that provide majestic panoramic views rise from the villagers’ backyards.  Beyond the mountains are plateaus

  • Gang Village

Gang Village is located in eastern Luang Prabang Province towards the Vietnam border. In June 2008, we drove for five hours from Luang Prabang Village on paved roads, followed by a three hour drive on a treacherous, unpaved dirt road that could only be negotiated and overcome with a heavy-duty, big-wheeled SUV. The road was slippery and very muddy during the rainy season.

  • Gokwanh Village

Gokwanh Village, located 30 kilometers north of Luang Prabang, was established five centuries ago. The original villagers came from Xiengsen and Xieng Hai, Thailand.

  • Kokmanh Village

Kokmanh Village is located 22 miles or 40 minutes southwest of Luang Prabang. We traveled by tuk tuk on the main road before turning onto a roughly paved dirt road. The power lines to the village were balanced on leaning bamboo poles.

  • Kokngiew Village

Kokngiew Village is located about 15 kilometers east of Luang Prabang.

  • Long Or Village

Long Or was founded in 1825 by 22 adventurous but peace seeking Nuans, an ethnic group indigenous to northeastern Thailand. The Nuans left Thailand 180 years ago to escape the many conflicts with China and Burma, and to settle in the bucolic setting of Long Or.   Located on the southern shore of the Khan River, there are over 110 families and 610 people in Long Or Village. The villagers are primarily farmers.
